Biography

Carolyn Carpenter is currently President of Johns Hopkins National Capital Region (NCR). In this newly
created role, Carpenter leads all hospital-based and community-based ambulatory sites across the
National Capital Region on behalf of Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including Sibley
Memorial Hospital and Suburban Hospital. She is responsible for the strategic growth and operational
performance of all current and future JHM entities and initiatives within the NCR which encompasses
Washington, DC and the adjacent counties in Maryland and northern Virginia.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Ms. Carpenter served as the President of Sentara Norfolk General
Hospital and Corporate Vice President of Sentara Healthcare. These roles included leading a 525-bed
community teaching hospital and Level I Trauma Center as well as serving as the system executive for
the Sentara Cancer Network and Sentara Cardiovascular Services spanning twelve hospitals in Virginia
and North Carolina.

Ms. Carpenter came to Sentara after working at Duke Health for twenty years. During that time, she
served in a variety of capacities including Chief Operating Officer of Duke University Hospital, Associate
Dean of the Duke School of Medicine, Associate Vice President of Oncology Services for the Duke Health
System, and Associate Chief Operating Officer for Medical/Surgical/Critical Care Services. Ms. Carpenter
led the creation of the Duke Cancer Institute, the first of its kind at Duke that brings together clinical,
research, and basic science operations into one organization. Before joining Duke, she held positions as
Academic Administrator for the Department of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania and Senior Management Analyst at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals.
Ms. Carpenter received her B.A. at the University of Pennsylvania and her MHA from Medical College of
Virginia. She completed an administrative fellowship at Duke. She is a Fellow of the American College of
Healthcare Executives and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill School of Public Health. In 2016-7, Ms. Carpenter was among the inaugural class of Carol Emmott
Fellows, a select fellowship for women leaders aimed at empowering female health executives to bridge
the gender gap in the C-suite and transform health care.
