Biography

A board-certified gastroenterologist, Ji Young Bang, MD, specializes in advanced endoscopy at the Orlando Health Digestive Health Institute Center for Advanced Endoscopy, Research & Education. She treats complex digestive disorders and serves as the director of clinical research at the Orlando Health Digestive Health Institute.

Her clinical interests and notable procedures include:

  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection and submucosal dissection
  • Luminal interventions
  • Third-space endoscopy, including peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) and gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (GPOEM)

Dr. Bang earned her medical degree along with an intercalated bachelor’s degree in pharmacology at University College London Medical School in the United Kingdom. She followed this with a master’s degree in public health at Imperial College London. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a gastroenterology fellowship at Indiana University in Indianapolis. She then completed a fellowship in advanced endoscopy under the tutelage of Drs. Shyam Varadarajulu and Robert Hawes, followed by additional training in tissue resection with Dr. Michael Bourke in Sydney, Australia, and third-space endoscopy in Pune and Surat, India.

An internationally recognized researcher in interventional endoscopy, Dr. Bang has conducted 15 randomized clinical trials to date and has won numerous awards at all major national and international conferences for her research. She also has authored more than 100 original articles, editorials, book chapters and review articles to date. Dr. Bang lectures nationally and internationally, with nearly 50 lectures and oral presentations to her credit.

She serves on the editorial advisory board of the United European Gastroenterology Journal, is the former associate editor of Digestive Endoscopy and is a reviewer for 15 medical journals. She is a fellow of the Japanese Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society and vice-chair of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy EUS special interest group. Dr. Bang also is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association and the American College of Gastroenterology.
